Siberian Husky  Information

Description of the Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky is a strong, powerful medium sized dog that gives the impression of compact energy. They are very alert looking with sharply pointed ears that are always held erect. The face is somewhat fox like in appearance with a broad head and strong looking slightly tapering muzzle. The nose may be any color or combination of colors as can the eyes. Siberian Huskies may have two different colored eyes or may even have eyes that have two different colors, called parti-eyes. The coat may be any combination of colors including solid black or solid white and most patterns. The unique coats are very desirable in the breed and add to the wonderful range of colors that can be found. The coat is thick and wooly with a coarser, slightly longer outer coat for protection. The tail is carried in a sickle shape, not tightly curled on the back as some people believe. The feet are broad and have abundant hair between the pads to give traction on the ice.

Temperament of a Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky makes an ideal family pet and is typically good with children of all ages and other pets. They do need to be properly socialized as puppies to be accepting of other animals. A natural pack breed they tend to get along with all other dogs, even those that are somewhat dominant. Males will be more aggressive than females, but neither is considered to be dog-aggressive in general circumstances. They Siberian Husky is not considered a guard or watchdog, as they are very friendly with everyone, even stray dogs and animals. As a general rule they are rather independent and like to do their own thing, rather than be totally obedient. They are playful and love to run and romp with family members. The breed can be destructive if left alone so consider another dog or Siberian Husky if they are going to have to spend time by himself or herself. They love to work and be challenged and are an excellent dog for long walks and outings.

Grooming & Shedding of a Siberian Husky

The dense and thick coat of the Siberian Husky is virtually self cleaning, requiring only occasional combing with a medium toothed comb. Avoid bathing these dogs unless absolutely necessary as shampoo will strip the hair of natural oils and result in matting and hair breakage. They do shed profusely twice a year and will need daily grooming at these times. Since this is an Arctic breed they do not do well in hot climates and will need to stay indoors or in air-conditioned areas in hot weather.

History of the Siberian Husky Breed

Bred as a working sled dog in Siberia it was brought to Alaska in the very early 1800's. It was used in Siberia as a herd dog, moving reindeer, as a sled dog, and also as a protection dog while out in the wilderness. Siberian Huskies gained fame and worldwide attention when a team of these courageous dogs was able to get diphtheria medicine to Nome, Alaska to prevent the deaths of countless people. They continue to be used in exploration of the north as well as in dog sled races such as the Iditarod.
